Marital fidelity? For the writer Georg, it is a thing of the past. Instead of a lifelong commitment, he preaches free love—at least until his own convictions catch up with him. When his mistress Irmgard—who is also his former secretary—becomes pregnant by him and eventually marries his twin brother John, the story takes a tragic turn... Lang’s first collaboration with Thea von Harbou (working title: *Madonna in the Snow*) blends romantic melodrama and nature myth into a visually bold early work. Sophisticated flashbacks, striking Alpine landscapes, and an already unmistakable flair for cinematic experimentation hint that the director would, a few years later, rank among cinema’s great innovators.
