Soon, the stakes go beyond the gripping question of the perpetrator's identity: is evil even tied to a specific individual anymore? It comes as no surprise that this dark parable was banned after the Nazis seized power; Lang’s supervillain embodies an ideology that spreads like a virus, turning its hosts into mindless enforcers—a prescient warning of the terror to be unleashed by the coming regime.
