In 1933, just before the Nazis seize power in Germany, an ocean liner sails from Veracruz to Bremerhaven. On board is an international mix of passengers whose journey offers ample opportunity not only to indulge their hopes and ambitions, but also to reveal their prejudices, fears, and personal failings—all against the backdrop of an impending historical catastrophe.

Stanley Kramer's adaptation of Katherine Anne Porter's acclaimed novel features an outstanding international ensemble cast. Released in 1965, the film won two Academy Awards® for Best Black-and-White Art Direction and Best Black-and-White Cinematography, and received six additional Oscar® nominations, including Best Actor for Oskar Werner.
