Darling
Diana Scott stops at nothing in her pursuit of success, using her charm and powers of seduction to climb the social ladder. Moving through a series of relationships while embracing the glamorous party life of London and Paris, she appears to have everything she desires—until she finds herself trapped in a gilded cage. A sharp and satirical portrait of the fashionable elite, the film exposes the hedonism, superficiality, and double standards of the era.
John Schlesinger's third feature film, based on a screenplay by Frederic Raphael, won three Academy Awards in 1966 for Best Actress, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Screenplay, as well as a Golden Globe and four BAFTA Awards. It became Schlesinger's most successful film to date, a distinction he would surpass only a few years later with ASPHALT COWBOY (1969), which earned him the Academy Award for Best Director. In 1999, the British Film Institute ranked DARLING among the 100 greatest British films of all time. The film also launched Julie Christie to international stardom with her unforgettable performance.
