Coming Out
For seven years, Heiner Carow (THE LEGEND OF PAUL AND PAULA) fought to bring this film – unique in the GDR – to fruition: a work about personal freedom at a time of political upheaval, centred on Philipp, a young teacher whose life is thrown completely off course by an encounter with another man. He becomes increasingly aware that he can no longer live his life according to society’s expectations … The exploration of homosexuality represents a massive breach of taboo, through which the entire nation experiences its ‘coming out’ in the truest sense of the word: the film premiered on the night the Berlin Wall fell, thus becoming the symbolic culmination of DEFA’s history, and went on to win a Silver Bear at the Berlinale just a few months later.
