Cockfighter
After losing a wager, devoted cockfighter Frank Mansfield vows to remain silent until he earns the title of the South's greatest cockfighter. Roaming through the American South, he encounters rivals, drifters, and a woman who forces him to choose between love and the obsession that defines his life. With Cockfighter (1974), Monte Hellman crafted a singular character study of obsession, pride, and self-destruction. Based on Charles Willeford's novel and anchored by Warren Oates' almost entirely wordless performance, the film unfolds with hypnotic restraint and a haunting atmosphere. Today, Cockfighter is regarded as one of the hidden gems of the New Hollywood era.
