After losing a wager, devoted cockfighter Frank Mansfield vows to remain silent until he earns the title of the South's greatest cockfighter. Roaming through the American South, he encounters rivals, drifters, and a woman who forces him to choose between love and the obsession that defines his life. Driven by relentless ambition, Frank pushes forward regardless of the personal sacrifices required.

With Cockfighter (1974), Monte Hellman crafted a singular character study of obsession, pride, and self-destruction. Based on Charles Willeford's novel and anchored by Warren Oates' almost entirely wordless performance, the film unfolds with hypnotic restraint and a haunting atmosphere. Today, Cockfighter is regarded as one of the hidden gems of the New Hollywood era.
