Cinema Next: Bilder sehen, Bilder denken

Duration 90 min.

Most films consist of imagery. The assumption is that films are moving images. But what happens when films begin to question the process of their own imagery—when they trace the making of an image, the showing of an image, or even the very possibility and existence of images themselves?

Particularly within the tradition of experimental film, one frequently encounters works that do not merely limit themselves to producing images but instead make the conditions of their own viewing visible. What does it mean to make an image? What does it mean to show an image? And what happens when films explore these questions through their own form?

"Bilder sehen, Bilder denken" brings together films that engage with this cinematic gesture in various ways: through exposure and materiality, the construction and destruction of images, memory, perception, and the political conditions of seeing. These films do not simply show something; they reflect upon it.

The program was curated by Sebastian Bobik, who will also host the evening.
