"Show life as it is." Vertov has always followed this maxim in his work. Here it finds its highest perfection: in a city symphony that completely dispenses with narrative and theatrical elements and places the effect of the montage at the centre. The camera itself becomes the protagonist, taking us on a journey through everyday Soviet life and leaving us marvelling - just like the children who are repeatedly shown - at the interweaving of the "dawn of first sight" with the spirit of optimism after the revolution. The editing by Elisaveta Svilova, Vertov's partner of many years and the keeper of his legacy, plays a very special role here by bringing the filmed reality into a meaningful context.
