Currently, abortion is prohibited under all circumstances in 24 countries. El Salvador has one of the strictest abortion laws in the world. Women can be convicted of aggravated murder and sentenced to up to 40 years in prison for having an abortion. Cautivas reports on the case of Cristina Quintanilla, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for having an abortion. When her case was reviewed, she was released from prison after four and a half years. However, the consequences of her imprisonment continue to overshadow her life to this day.
