Cartouche
France, early 18th century: The charming and cunning bandit Cartouche makes a habit of robbing wealthy nobles, placing him high on the authorities' most-wanted list. He is also a thorn in the side of Malichot—the villainous leader of his former gang and his own uncle. Then, an encounter with the spirited and beautiful thief Vénus throws his love life into disarray... Philippe de Broca—who would go on to direct two more of the best Belmondo films, *That Man from Rio* and *Le Magnifique*—combines an opulent CinemaScope spectacle with comedy and a dash of romance, based on historical events. Meanwhile, Claudia Cardinale brings energy and zest to the film, which stands as one of the most entertaining European crowd-pleasers of its era.
