Cardillac
Loosely based on Hoffmann's crime novella, the film focuses on the relationship between goldsmith Cardillac and his daughter Madelon, but sets the action in West Berlin in the 1960s. Cardillac does not shy away from murder in order to steal the jewellery he makes for his customers, which he adores. Caught up in the act of repression in ever more fantastic dream fantasies, the only way out for him is a bizarre suicide. This parable of the socially isolated artist uses alienation effects - from the abrupt change from black and white to colour scenes, or actors stepping out of their roles or reflecting on them - and provides trenchant illustrative material on an artist's existence in the cultural scene of his own time.
