Bürgermeister Anna

A village in the Mark Brandenburg, shortly after the end of the war: the young Anna Drews is elected mayor – a decision met with scepticism. Whilst she campaigns for a new school building, her conservative predecessor plots against her. Even her childhood friend, who has returned from captivity as a prisoner of war, finds it hard to come to terms with the idea of a woman in office … Influenced by social realism, this early DEFA production already demonstrates an attempt to place greater emphasis on the individual and to address the issue of equality in a programmatic manner. It portrays the development of the young state as a social experiment in which a newly forming society is searching for role models.
