Restaurant critic Charles Duchemin (Louis de Funès) is both respected and feared by France’s chefs. His annually published guide to French gastronomy, along with its star ratings, can make restaurant owners rich and famous, but can just as easily drive them into ruin. To avoid being recognized, he regularly disguises himself.
Duchemin’s great mission is to champion French cuisine and expose his rival, industrial tycoon Jacques Tricatel. Tricatel owns a large chain of motorway service stations and fast-food restaurants, where he sells synthetically produced food from his factories. A typical parvenu, he has risen to wealth through ruthlessness, with no manners and a constant craving for social recognition.
As Tricatel grows increasingly powerful, he drives small, family-run restaurants across France out of business. Duchemin declares war on the industrialist and sets off on one final, secret mission to assess restaurants throughout the country.
