Bruno – Der junge Kreisky

Austrian politics is usually only explicitly addressed in Austrian cinema in the form of documentaries. Now, Harald Sicheritz has dedicated the first biopic to one of the most influential figures of the Second Republic. As the title suggests, however, the film focuses on the early years of the future Chancellor and, through opulent imagery, tells the story of how the son of a middle-class family proved himself within the socialist workers’ youth movement in the 1920s, whilst facing scepticism and resistance from those closest to him. Amidst an increasingly radicalised society, he and his comrades put their lives on the line with their actions. A history lesson featuring a star-studded cast right down to the smallest supporting roles, staged in a thrillingly modern style.
