Transylvania, 1780: Prince Mamuwalde travels from distant Africa to the dark heart of Europe to meet Count Dracula, hoping to enlist his support in the fight against slavery. However, the Wallachian nobleman turns out to be a proponent of the slave trade—and a vampire who transforms Mamuwalde with a single bite. When the blood-sucking Black man reawakens centuries later in Los Angeles... Hammer Horror meets a genre rooted in Black American culture—a recipe for Grindhouse success. That was the vision of the financially strapped executives at American International Pictures, and that is exactly what happened. Amidst the sheer bizarreness and stylistic clumsiness, the subtle nuances crafted by feature-film debutant William Crain too often fell on deaf ears. (Olaf Möller)
