Big Night – Nacht der Genüsse

Stanley Tucci tells, in a charming and bittersweet way, the story of the Italian brothers Primo and Secondo, who run a small restaurant in New Jersey in the 1950s. Whilst Primo remains uncompromisingly committed to authentic Italian cuisine, the pragmatic Secondo struggles to keep their restaurant afloat financially. When the chance arises for a glamorous evening with a famous guest, the brothers put all their eggs in one basket and prepare a feast that is set to change their fate. The film is a heart-warming declaration of love for good food, family and the question of how much one should sacrifice for one’s dreams.

Big Night is now regarded as a minor classic of culinary cinema. However, the film is not JUST about food; it is just as much about dignity, art and the conflict between idealism and economic reality.
