Burma/Myanmar - a powder keg for decades. To this day, the country is characterised by coups and civil war, and demonstrations are brutally crushed by the military. Back in the mid-1990s, director John Boorman and producer Eric Pleskow made human rights violations the subject of their film BEYOND RANGOON, which drew attention to a previously invisible tragedy: the massacre of August 1988. The film tells the story of Laura, a doctor whose husband and son were murdered and who travels to Burma to distract herself from her grief and trauma. There, the military tries to take action against the freedom fighter and later Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. Tourists are told to leave the country, but Laura stays behind and gets caught up in the merciless political struggle in the interior. The last production, in which Eric Pleskow is directly involved, was particularly close to his heart.
