Bellissima
A Roman working-class woman tries everything she can, using all her (abundant) temperament, to get her little daughter into the movie business. The reason: director Alessandro Blasetti (played by himself) is looking for the most beautiful child in Rome, la bellissima di Roma, for a film project. Documentary touch plus melodrama. Visconti combines an almost solemn precision in his observation of everyday life with the spark of satire. A journey through the milieus of Rome and the ridiculousness of the film industry – guided by the star of the chimera and the considerable energy of the donna del popolo Anna Magnani. Visconti's exercise in the style of neorealist satire and the art of the sequence shot. With a mixture of bile and observational pleasure, Bellissima comments on how cinema relates to life and vice versa. (H.T.)
