Henry Chinaski drifts from one Los Angeles bar to the next, finding life more bearable in the dim haze of smoky taverns. His days are filled with cheap drinks, cynical observations, and a kind of stoic self-destruction that has become a ritual. Yet beneath his rough exterior lies a man who sees far more than he is willing to admit. When he meets Wanda Wilcox, a woman who seems just as adrift as he is, they form an unlikely bond—a pact between two people who know they do not want to be saved, but would rather not go under alone.

Their relationship unfolds through alcohol-fueled arguments, shared excesses, and moments of unexpected tenderness. Henry writes, Wanda drinks, and together they struggle to survive in a world that offers little room for luxuries such as optimism or hope.
