"I don't want to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members." This best describes his relationship with women, says professional comedian Alvy Singer, who celebrates his outsider existence in the sociotope of New York's Upper East Side. In contrast to his earlier works, Allen has opted for a balanced story here, in which pointed irony takes centre stage, and plays with styles and narrative forms. He originally wanted to call the film, in which he also deals with his break-up story with Diane Keaton, "Anhedonia". "I was horrified by the title, which meant 'The Impossibility of Pleasure'. Who would or should go to the cinema for that?" Pleskow agreed with Allen on the name of the leading actress and once again convinced the Academy, which honoured ANNIE HALL four times.
