Rome 1974: Guido, a budding avant-garde artist, feels trapped in his overly bourgeois and intrusive family: His wife Serena, even though she is very much in love with the artist, can do little with art. Against their will, their children Dario, ten, and Paolo, five, witness the complicated and passionate relationship between their parents. Between art happenings, craziness, Super 8 films, lazy vacations and confessions, Guido's family searches for the path to happiness.

Director Daniele Luchetti on his film: “After MIO FRATELLO È FIGLIO UNICO and LA NOSTRA VITA, this is the third time I've found myself making a movie about family. In the first, I told the story of someone else's family, in the second, that of my own. Only now, with the third story, do I realize that I have come closer and closer to the need to tell my own story. What is true and what is made up? The facts are, for the most part, the fruits of my imagination, although the feelings are absolutely authentic. Strangely enough, it was necessary to invent a whole series of lies in order to arrive at what I would humbly define as the truth. It was a constant challenge to feel both affection and dislike for my characters, who are fictional but inspired by my parents.”
