…All the Marbles
“A purely commercial film. No messages, just a comedy,” Robert Aldrich claimed about his swan song, so as not to arouse suspicion. But behind the entertaining facade of a rousing underdog sports film, sheer subversion lurks once again. The California Dolls (Vicki Frederick and Laurene Landon) are a team of female wrestlers touring the backcountry with their manager (Peter Falk) and hoping for their big break. Between stunningly staged matches, they engage in quick-witted banter about their precarious situation as they drive through the industrial ruins of the early Reaganomics era to the sound of opera music. Aldrich’s final ode to the struggle for survival of outsiders (loosely modeled after Abraham Polonsky) is a showbiz satire that mirrors the American Way of Life: even when triumph comes from the heart, it remains mercilessly hollow.
