This cross-section of Jarman’s early works provides an overview of the crucial developmental phase in which his artistic practice turned to cinema, already reflecting his lifelong fascination with magic, alchemy, esotericism, and transgression. Originally created as private films for (and by) Jarman and his circle, these ecstatic explorations of the Super 8 medium capture the chaotic London locations where Jarman lived and worked, a ghostly expedition to megaliths, or a sun-drenched stay on Fire Island near New York. Taken together, they form a portrait of the artist as a (relatively) young man who, through engaging with his influences—Jack Smith, Kenneth Anger, Maya Deren, Jonas Mekas, Cocteau, and Brakhage—developed his own extraordinary voice and vision.
