Abbé Pierre

Although Henri Grouès was born into a wealthy family, the Frenchman dedicated his entire life to the persecuted and oppressed. At the age of 20, he joined the Capuchin order as a monk. When the Second World War broke out shortly afterwards, he joined the Resistance and helped hundreds of Jewish families to escape. After the end of the war, he became a member of the National Assembly, founded the worldwide aid organisation for the homeless "Emmaus" and triggered a wave of solidarity during the cold snap of 1953 with a moving radio address.
