A torinói ló (The Turin Horse)
Two people—a father and his daughter—live a monotonous existence on a remote farm, in a space seemingly untouched by time. They eat potatoes, muck out the stable, and gaze out the window into the distance. While nothing appears to change, the world around them is slowly collapsing… In this final masterpiece, Béla Tarr once again conjures the apocalyptic atmosphere characteristic of his films through long, unbroken takes, minimalist black-and-white compositions, and expressive music. Inspired by the anecdote of Nietzsche suffering a mental breakdown upon witnessing a horse being beaten, the film unfolds as an inverted, six-day creation story—a process in which everything gradually vanishes, until, in the end, all light is extinguished.
