5 Centimeters per Second

From Yoshiyuki Okuyama

With Hokuto Matsumura, Mitsuki Takahata, Yuzu Aoki, Nana Mori

Year 2025

Duration 123 min.

Language Japanese

During the cherry-blossom-coloured days of their childhood, Takaki and Akari share a close friendship, brought together by their mutual love of books and astronomy. A final reunion on a snowy night becomes a defining memory for both of them, and they promise to meet again years later beneath the same cherry tree.

In the present, however, their lives have taken separate paths, crossing only occasionally. As the day of their long-promised reunion draws closer, Takaki cannot help but look forward to the seemingly impossible encounter. Trapped in the monotony of everyday life, he finds little joy in either his successful career as a programmer or his relationship. Perhaps because he has never completely let go of his childhood dream of becoming an astronaut.

When his supervisor offers him a new position at a planetarium, it feels like a sign that a part of his childhood has returned to him, and the seemingly impossible reunion no longer seems quite so impossible.
