Retrospective

4 For Texas

From Robert Aldrich

With Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Anita Ekberg, Ursula Andress, Charles Bronson

Year 1963

Duration 115 min.

Language English

With "Ocean’s Eleven" (1960), Aldrich’s mentor Lewis Milestone had launched the Rat Pack film craze, and Aldrich jumped on the bandwagon with this Western comedy. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin play cowboys who foil a stagecoach robbery so they can get their hands on the loot themselves. Soon they find themselves in the crosshairs of the thwarted bandit (Charles Bronson) ... Although conceived as a Western satire, the genre remains merely a backdrop in "4 For Texas": With its crude mix of kid-friendly slapstick (including a worthy guest appearance by the Three Stooges), sex comedy (featuring European star actresses Ursula Andress and Anita Ekberg), and Rat Pack inside jokes, the film failed to find an audience: a rare case of an Aldrich film without deeper meaning. Instead, it offers light-hearted entertainment featuring the largest ensemble of Aldrich’s regular actors ever—in a rare Technicolor print. (C.H.)
