Dorothea was already 40 years old when she gave birth to her son Jamie Fields. Many thought she was too old to have a baby. The father left the family in 1974, and since then Dorothea has been trying to find a substitute father for Jamie, who is now 15 years old. She gets support from two young women: Abbie , the free-spirited and creative flatmate, and Jamie's best friend Julie, a girl who is both intelligent and provocative. As different as they are, all four stand up for each other - and they succeed in creating a bond for life.
