12 Angry Men

FromSidney Lumet,

WithHenry Fonda, Martin Balsam, Lee J. Cobb, Jack Warden, Ed Begley.

Year1957

Duration95min.

One of the twelve jurors who are to judge a Puerto Rican teenager doubts his guilt and tries to convince the others. Cinema debutant Sidney Lumet, fresh from live television, realises the material as a superb dramatic chamber play, stirringly acted and absolutely watertightly staged by a magnificent ensemble. The continuous use of lenses with ever greater focal lengths gradually increases the feeling of claustrophobia. The victory of reason is just as logical as its embodiment by Henry Fonda: 12 Angry Men is a parable and a hopeful work typical of its time. As a prelude to five decades of ambiguous Lumet cinema about justice and morality, this is also a film with its first barbs: you don't need two hours to turn over a jury. (Christoph Huber)
