Robert Aldrich – Rebel in Hollywood
Robert Aldrich (1918–83) ranks among Hollywood’s greatest filmmakers. Spanning nearly three decades and 30 films, his career as a director was marked by global successes, including such renowned titles as “Vera Cruz” (1954), “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” (1962), “The Dirty Dozen” (1967), and “The Longest Yard” (1974). Along the way, he redefined entire genres with masterpieces like the apocalyptic film noir “Kiss Me Deadly” (1955) and the disillusioned late-period Western “Ulzana’s Raid” (1972)—achievements for which he was celebrated by critics, albeit often belatedly. In fact, after only a handful of films, Aldrich had already been hailed in France by the figures who would soon launch the “Nouvelle Vague”—including Claude Chabrol, François Truffaut, and Jean-Luc Godard, all of whom were then working as critics—as a prime example of their “politique des auteurs”. Even the often-rival publications “Cahiers du cinéma” and “Positif” found common ground when they declared 1955 the “Year of Aldrich.”
This retrospective of Robert Aldrich’s work is nearly complete—two films cannot be screened at this time due to rights issues—and, with few exceptions, presents his body of work (including a key project from his time as an assistant director) in its original format, using vintage 35mm prints. We extend our gratitude to the fellow film archives and collectors who made this possible. A joint retrospective by the Viennale and the Austrian Film Museum
During the Viennale—from October 23 to November 4, 2026—special ticketing arrangements will apply at the Film Museum.
