Peter Kubelka’s cycle “What Is Film”
In 1996, to mark the centenary of cinema, Peter Kubelka created the cyclical program “Was ist Film” (What Is Film). According to Kubelka, the program “defines film through examples as an independent art form—as a tool that conveys new ways of thinking. It offers young filmmakers and anyone seriously engaging with the medium of film a fundamental overview across 64 programs.”
“Was ist Film” is screened every Tuesday evening in two sessions, presented exactly as Peter Kubelka intended. Discounted tickets (3 euros) are available for students with a membership.
The book accompanying the series—”Was ist Film: Peter Kubelkas Zyklisches Programm im Österreichischen Filmmuseum”—is available at the Film Museum box office for 9 euros.
