Open the Aperture! 50 Years of the Austrian Association of Cinematographers

At first glance, it seems quite simple: no camera, no film. It is the apparatus through which we perceive people, spaces, and time in the cinema. In conjunction with light, movement, and image composition, it directs our gaze, creates meaning, and shapes the stories unfolding on the screen.

Fifty years ago, Austrian cinematographers joined forces to give their work a collective voice. Their association, the Austrian Association of Cinematographers (AAC), became the domestic film industry’s first professional association, playing a pivotal role in its professionalization. At a time when filmmakers worked without collective agreements or social security, the AAC championed fair working conditions, binding standards, and professional exchange within a field previously defined by an “every person for themselves” mentality. This solidarity led not only to improved production conditions but also—and most significantly—to a new sense of identity for Austrian cinema.

We are taking this anniversary as an opportunity to showcase the diverse ways cinematographers can make reality visible: as precise observation, emotional distillation, or a poetic translation of memory and history. The camera never merely records; it discovers and opens up new perspectives. It often reveals precisely what eludes our immediate view—thereby making the invisible visible.
