Zuflucht in Shanghai
MI 13.11.: Followed by a discussion with Paul Rosdy about his work on Jewish exile in Shanghai
In the years 1939-41, around 20,000 Jews managed to flee to Shanghai. Many of the emigrants believed that this was only a stopover - and yet they had to spend a long time there. After Japan's entry into the war and its alliance with Hitler's Germany, the Jewish refugees were once again interned in the ghetto. Often under the most difficult conditions, they nevertheless develop something like a cultural life and hope for a better future. In their film, the author duo Joan Grossman and Paul Rosdy combine the personal stories of survivors with newsreels of the time, archive material and astonishing private footage in an exciting way.
