In the middle of the 18th century in Transylvania: 25 years after the end of the war, Sándor returns to his homeland and immediately falls out with the wealthy pig farmer Zsupan. Zsupan once snapped up Sándor's family property, and now he is the victim of a taunting song to the laughter of the people. A short time later, Sándor meets the village's Roma community, including the young Saffi, who falls in love with the dashing lad ...
The carefree goings-on on the screen are juxtaposed with the reality of 1935, when the Nazis were in the process of ‘liberating’ their ‘national community’ from all impurities by brutal means. Adolf Wohlbrück, a quarter-Jew, homosexual and the ‘most beautiful man in German cinema’, will go to London a year later and restart his career there. (Florian Widegger)
