Part of the special series LICHTSPIELE

Little Zazie comes to Paris for a weekend, determined at last to ride the Métro. But just at that moment, the transport workers go on strike. And so begins a wild, turbulent adventure across the city. Zazie slips away from her uncle, meets a host of eccentric characters, and plunges headlong into the chaos of the big city with boundless curiosity.

As she whirls through cafés, streets, and back courtyards, Paris turns into a playground full of surprises. Reality and fantasy blur, and Zazie’s cheeky, sharp-eyed view of the world (and of adults) infects everyone with a powerful sense of joy and discovery.

The breakneck pace and verbal wit already stem from Raymond Queneau’s novel, which upended literary conventions with its playful coinages and anarchic humor. Louis Malle translates this spirit into the visual language of the Nouvelle Vague, which likewise questioned narrative structures and authority. The result is a perfect symbiosis and a whirlwind of ideas that reinvents Paris through a child’s eyes.
