A family chronicle at the end of the 20th century: when the grandmother falls into a coma, the lives of the family members are thrown out of joint: Dad NJ, manager at a faltering computer company, meets his former lover again, while his wife goes to a sanatorium because of a nervous crisis. The two children in particular suffer as a result of these changes ... While big city life rages outside in Taipei, the small events of everyday life set the tone in the last, multi-award-winning film by Edward Yang, who died aged just 59. The depth and seriousness with which he portrays his characters in their search for a little happiness in life is unrivalled. A touching, honest, deeply humanistic masterpiece. (Florian Widegger)
