Young Indigenous environmental activist Juma Xipaia comes from the heart of the Amazon and has risked her life for years fighting for the rights of Indigenous peoples in Brazil. Under the government of Jair Bolsonaro, illegal gold mining in the region expanded dramatically, causing widespread environmental destruction and claiming countless lives through poisoned drinking water. Juma gains not only international recognition but also influence in her home country: she is appointed as a representative to the world’s first Ministry for Indigenous Peoples. While her husband Hugo, working for Brazil’s environmental agency under current president Lula da Silva, destroys illegal gold mines, Juma navigates the tensions between activism, constant threats, and motherhood — taking enormous personal risks along the way.

Austrian director Richard Ladkani (Sea of Shadows) has already earned international acclaim for his environmental documentaries. Both intimate and epic, he tells a gripping story in stunning images about Indigenous sovereignty, love, and the fight for a better future.
