A young Iranian woman who has killed her much older husband and been sentenced to death is given the chance, during the Yalda festival, to plead for forgiveness from the victim’s daughter on a live reality TV show; viewers then vote for or against her execution. Grand Jury Prize, Sundance Film Festival 2020.

Cameras and spotlights are in position. The host takes one last look at his notes—then the show goes live, on the night of Yalda, the Persian winter solstice. That evening’s guest is Maryam, a young woman on death row. Sitting opposite her in the studio is Mona, who once felt like an older sister to her. Maryam had been in a temporary marriage with Mona’s father and now stands accused of murdering him.

In front of the cameras and millions of viewers, Maryam must ask for forgiveness and fight for her life—while the audience votes on whether she should be executed. A gripping chamber drama that, beyond the protagonist’s personal fate, reveals the broader social dimensions of the story. Grand Jury Prize, Sundance Film Festival 2020.
