Wolf & Dog
The film is set in the Azores - with their fantastic landscape and nature, a longing destination for countless tourists, but a cramped island for those who live there. The everyday life of the protagonist Ana and other young inhabitants, including a defiantly open, queer community, takes place above a constant background noise of the deepest Catholicism. Regardless of their attempts to fit into the island traditions, one question dominates their lives: If and how they can or must leave the island? Against a dazzlingly beautiful natural backdrop, Varejão tells a universal story of coming-of-age and coming-out - in short: of liberation. (Viennale, Barbara Kronsfoth)
