It begins on that unspeakable night of 9 to 10 November 1938, when the Nazis' hatred of Jews was unleashed in a cruel manner. Ferry Tobler realises the gravity of his situation that night, when his father is murdered, and leaves Vienna head over heels. On his escape, which takes him via Prague to Paris and Marseille, he repeatedly encounters new companions, including the resistance fighter "Gandhi", who has escaped from the concentration camp.
