Wir waren Kumpel

FromChristian Johannes Koch, Jonas Matauschek

Year2024

Duration104min.

LanguageGerman

“I have no idea how my life would have turned out with a different profession. But by now, mining has become a part of me,” says Martina, a trans woman and the only woman ever to have worked underground in German coal mining.
As the closure of the mine looms, she transfers to a salt mine.
Her former comrades, Locke and Langer, work their final shift — faces blackened with coal dust, taking one last shower, scrubbing each other’s backs before saying goodbye to an era and to each other.
The film follows them as they transition into an uncertain future: new jobs, new paths.
A visually striking documentary narrative about farewell, the deep bonds forged underground, and the challenge of building a new life.

A recommendation for anyone wondering: What does the green transition mean for those whose jobs disappear and who must reinvent themselves? Where do identity and solidarity get lost in the process of the energy transition?
