Even as a young boy, Jiro Horikoshi yearned for lofty heights. The sensitive dreamer would love to glide through the sky in aeroplanes of his own design, just like his great role model, the Italian engineer Caproni. However, his short-sightedness prevents Jiro from pursuing a career as a pilot. Instead, he joins a large Japanese engineering firm and revolutionises aircraft construction worldwide with his innovative ideas and designs. During a train journey, he meets the beautiful Nahoko, with whom he becomes engaged years later after a chance reunion and who becomes his muse and great love. But while Jiro ends up building war planes over the years, Nahoko struggles with health problems...

HOW THE WIND RISES is the last film by world-famous filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, who founded the Japanese animation studio Ghibli in 1985. The gifted master director has received numerous awards for his films, which are among the classics of anime films, including the Oscar® and Golden Bear for ‘Chihiro's Journey to Magic Land’ and the Golden Lion for ‘The Changing Castle’. In HOW THE WIND RISES, the viewer also experiences the great Kanto earthquake, the Great Depression and Japan's entry into the Second World War at first hand through a visually stunningly staged story. HOW THE WIND RISES was the most successful film in Japan in 2013.
