WEST INDIES OU LES NÈGRES MARRONS DE LA LIBERTÉ
Med Hondo's elaborate portrayal of the colonial history of the French Antilles: In a wooden ship setting, the ensemble sings, dances and plays with historical facts of the exploitation of the Caribbean islands by France. In his decolonial, satirical version of the classic musical comedy, Hondo stages the centuries-long colonisation of African slaves, the uprisings of the oppressed and the imperialists' self-image. The foreign domination of the West Indies is still not over - which is another reason why this cinema painting is still valid.
