Wels in historischen Ansichten
We will be showing the ‘first Wels image film’, an extraordinary document of everyday life and the cityscape, which was produced in the mid-1920s on behalf of Wels business leaders. This will be followed by a programme of historical footage from 1930 to 1985.
Among other things, you can see footage of the Wels folk festival in 1930, the 1st Federal Games Festival of the German Gymnastics Federation in Wels in 1931, and the large cattle market in Wels in 1934. From the Nazi era, there are contributions such as Hermann Göring's visit to Wels in 1939 and an inspection with exercises by the female fire brigade assistants of the Wels fire brigade in 1943.
A film document from the post-war period shows the evacuation of the Spanish Riding School to Wels in 1946, footage of various folk festivals and the legendary house balls at the Hotel Greif in the 1950s, the demolition of the Karlsbrücke bridge and the construction of the Neustadt underpass in 1958/60, and footage of the first pedestrian zone in Wels in Schmidtgasse in 1978.
The programme concludes with footage of the 2nd Austrian Film Days in 1985.
The screening is supported by the Wels City Archives.
