*Welcome II The Terrordome* was the first feature film by a Black British female director to be released in UK cinemas. The “Terrordome” is a futuristic ghetto for Black people in Britain. Ngozi Onwurah’s experimental, low-budget thriller was dismissed by British critics as nihilistic, but today feels more relevant than ever. Themes such as police brutality and the links between slavery and present-day institutional racism were overlooked at the time but have now become central to societal discourse.
Preceding the feature are two short films about growing up in a racist society: *Coffee Coloured Children* is an experimental monologue reflecting on the trauma of racial harassment and self-hatred, based on Onwurah’s and her brother’s experiences. In *Flight of the Swan*, a young Black ballerina defies prejudice and reconnects with her roots through *Swan Lake*. (Anupma Shanker)
