In the small town of Maybrook, the lives of the residents are turned upside down in a single night: at exactly 2:17 a.m., 17 children from a primary school class disappear without a trace. Teacher Justine Gandy (Julia Garner) quickly becomes the centre of attention when she claims to be haunted by the ghosts of the missing children. While the parents desperately search for answers and the police increasingly suspect Justine, only Archer Graff (Josh Brolin), the father of one of the missing children, believes in her innocence and hopes to find clues about the disappearance of his own daughter. The investigation reveals that the children apparently left their homes of their own accord, which only adds to the mystery. With each passing hour, mistrust within the community grows, and rumours and fears spread. In addition to Justine and Archer, other people eventually come under scrutiny, including police officer Paul Morgan (Alden Ehrenreich) and school principal Andrew Marcus (Benedict Wong).
