Peter Kubelka created the Cyclical Program "Was ist Film" ("What is Film") in 1996 to celebrate the centenary of cinema. According to Kubelka, the program "uses examples to define film as an independent art form, a tool that conveys new ways of thinking. It provides young filmmakers and anyone serious about engaging with the medium of film with a foundational overview across 63 programs."

The book accompanying the cycle, *Was ist Film: Peter Kubelka’s Cyclical Program at the Austrian Film Museum*, is available at the museum’s ticket counter for €9.
