Faraz Fesharaki, an Iranian living in Berlin, spent over ten years recording video calls with his parents and cousin before finally realising that he had collected material for a film. Material for a poetic film that tells of the possibilities and impossibilities of communication in largely pixelated images. The film follows anecdotal scenes on the screens in Berlin, Isfahan and Linz, soon focusing on the rights of women in Iran, soon on shared memories, soon on persimmons from the garden. When the digital transmissions no longer fulfil the need for closeness, the parents come to Berlin. You hold your breath when they enter their son's flat, because not only are they entering a foreign world, they are also stepping out of the digital space into the present. A silent pain speaks from the images. Ozu's Tokyo Story for the internet generation. (Patrick Holzapfel)
