Admittedly, this star-studded battle scene cannot quite compete with Bondarchuk's almost perfect seven-hour epic, which was made ten years later. But Audrey Hepburn's nuanced interpretation lends Natasha Rostova a special brilliance – especially in the more intimate moments away from the monumental turmoil that met an audience saturated with epic films at the time, but is worth revisiting today.
