Seven years after Village Rockstars, a portrait of a group of women somewhere in the rural Indian state of Assam, we finally meet Dhunu again: she has grown into a determined young woman who—supported 150% by her mother—never loses sight of her dream to conquer the world with a rock band. For now, though, it’s still about finding her place within the village structures—and the right companions for her band.
But lightness in her life must be hard-won, as life-threatening problems like climate change and land grabbing lurk around every corner. In contrast, director Das, together with her protagonist Dhunu, sets against these forces one of the film’s most radiant moments: solidarity—more precisely, the joy of solidarity among women.
And when Dhunu moves through the vast landscapes of her homeland, we catch a quiet glimpse of what female freedom could look like—if only we found the courage to embrace that solidarity.
